Inspiration:

My inspiration has always been from the landscape.  In my earlier work I was fascinated with ancient sites and burial chambers (mostly in Ireland) and I usually painted scenes based on the interiors of megalithic tombs such as Newgrange.  Since moving to Central France my inspirations are still drawn from the landscape but more about colour, shape, and pattern of the everyday landscape.

I often focus on how marks in or on the landscape created by man interact and enhance what nature has laid out before us. (This was a subject that was strongly emphasised in my thesis). These marks are often agricultural, the way lines in fields define the natural contours or quarries have pitted and scarred the landscape but nevertheless create a striking and often quite beautiful scene.

The four seasons also play their role in my inspiration. I am particularly fond of the orange and red hues of late summer and early autumn in my landscapes as well as the contrasting winter hues. I like to walk and in doing so absorb the energies of nature around me.

I explore mark-making and the use of collage and print-making, creating natural pigments from soil, rocks and minerals as well as from herbs and plants grown in my garden for their pigment qualities.

It is going to be an exiting few years ahead for me as new techniques and media are being explored. I want to work alongside nature using the most natural and organic materials I can find to create a lasting impression of the subjects I adore. Visit my studio page to find out more.

I will never hope to match what nature has created, but I always give thanks to mother earth for inspiring me. Long live the natural environment. May God, yours or mine, preserve it from destruction.
